Engravings - Pt II

City of Galle ~ 18th century

Sarartha Sangraha

Palm leaf medical manuscript, based on a 4th century composition by the royal physician King Buddhadasa, depicting surgical instruments and vital places for acupuncture(Courtesy of British Council)

Admiral Joris van Spilbergen meeting King Vimala Dharma Suriya ~ 1602.

The fortress at Kalutara [Philip Baldaeus] ~ ca 1660

"The fortress at Kalutara was first constructed by the Portuguese in 1622 and was surrendered to the Dutch in 1655."

"This fort was later enlarged by the conquering Dutch with the addition two bastions. Very little of it remains and today the famous Kalutara Temple lies on this ground.

The Kandyan Convention - 2 March - 1815

"It is recorded by a British officer who attended a gala dinner in Colombo on February 19 - 1815 that the Governor of Ceylon, Robert Brownrigg was in tears with the realization of his achievement of being the first European to be the overlord of the whole island of Ceylon."

"For the first time since 1505, every ruling governor’s dream had been crushing the Kandyan Kingdom into submission. Yet time and again their superior firepower had been nullified by the ingenious tactics and the absolute will of a nation to be free of a foreign yoke."

"March 2, 1815 dawned like any day other in the hills of Kandy. Little did the inhabitants of the land realise that it would be their last as free citizens. The inhabitants of Kandy who had fled in the face of the advancing British army had by now returned to their homes. However, even the colourful military display, deliberately on show in front of the Dalada Maligawa on this momentous occasion, failed to attract the Kandyans."

"By 4 p.m., the chieftains started arriving at the Magulmaduwa or the Audience Hall, where the kings of Kandy used to hold court under its magnificent wooden arches. The chieftains arrived one by one, accompanied by their own whip crackers (kasakarayo) and were duly introduced to the gathering by Molligoda Adigaram.
In the presence of the Mahanayakes from the Malwatte and the Asgiriya temples, the convention was read out both in Sinhala and English. However the translations differed, with the Sinhala version not revealing some of the conditions of the surrender
